Evidence tossed at start of papal butler's trial

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The pope's once-trusted butler went on trial Saturday for allegedly stealing papal documents and passing them off to a journalist in the worst security breach of the Vatican's recent history ? a case that embarrassed the Vatican and may shed some light on the discreet, internal workings of the papal household.

In its first hearing in the case, the three-judge tribunal threw out some evidence gathered during the investigation of butler Paolo Gabriele, who is charged with aggravated theft. It also decided to separate Gabriele's trial from that of his co-defendant, a computer expert charged with aiding and abetting the crime.

Gabriele is accused of taking the pope's correspondences, photocopying the documents and handing them off to Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, whose book "His Holiness: The secret papers of Pope Benedict XVI," was published to great fanfare in May.

Nuzzi has said his source, code-named "Maria" in the book, wanted to shed light on the secrets of the church that were damaging it. Taken as a whole, the documents seem aimed primarily at discrediting Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican secretary of state and Benedict's longtime trusted deputy. Bertone, 77, a canon lawyer and soccer enthusiast, has frequently been criticized for perceived shortcomings in running the Vatican.

On Saturday, the court also announced that the pope's personal secretary, Monsignor Georg Gaenswein, had been called as a witness, testimony that is sure to attract attention given that Gaenswein rarely speaks in public much less about details of the intimate, papal family of which Gabriele formed part.

Other witnesses include one of the four consecrated women who take care of the pope's apartment, a monsignor in the Vatican secretary of state, the No. 2 Swiss Guard commander and the head of the Vatican police force.

Judge Giuseppe Dalla Torre set the next hearing for Tuesday, when Gabriele will be questioned. He said he thought the whole trial could be wrapped up in four more hearings.

Gabriele faces up to four years in prison if he is convicted. He has already confessed, saying he leaked the documents to shed light on what he called the "evil and corruption" in the church, and asked to be pardoned by the pope.

Gabriele, a 46-year-old father of three, appeared calm but tense during the 2 hour, 15 minute hearing, frequently crossing his hands or clasping them in his lap. He wore a light gray suit and tie.

He sat alone on a bench on one side of the intimate, austere courtroom following the proceedings impassively. During a break in the hearing, he chatted with his attorney, Cristiana Arru, and greeted journalists with a nod and a smile as he entered and exited.

Arru raised a series of objections at the start of the hearing, only some of which were accepted by the court. One concerned two jailhouse conversations Gabriele had with the head of the Vatican police force without his lawyers present. The judges declared the conversations were inadmissible. The content of the conversations isn't public.

Arru also sought access to the report of a commission of cardinals appointed by the pope to investigate the leaks alongside Vatican magistrates. The court denied the request.

Neither Gabriele's wife nor any of his three children attended the hearing. Space for the public was limited; eight of the 18 seats were taken up by the journalists who followed the proceedings and then briefed the rest of the Vatican press corps afterwards.

Security was relaxed, with the guards at the tribunal entrance mostly concerned that none of the press or public brought in any recording devices: They even checked pens to make sure they couldn't record, and sequestered cell phones into safe boxes. No television or still cameras were allowed, except for Vatican media which filmed the first moments at the start of the hearing.

Eight members of the Vatican gendarmerie who were called as witnesses were in the courtroom as well, but left during the break after the judges made clear they wouldn't be called to testify Saturday. Domenico Giani, the pope's personal bodyguard and the head of the Vatican police force, remained for the duration of the hearing.

Given the content of the leaks and the Vatican's penchant for secrecy, the fact that the trial was open to the public and media may have struck some as unusual. In fact, such trials in the Vatican's civil and penal tribunal are routinely public. They just don't happen very often or attract much attention. The Vatican's ecclesial courts on the other hand, which handle marriage annulments, clerical sex abuse cases and other matters of church law, remain firmly off-limits to outsiders.

In some ways, the willingness of the Vatican to proceed with the trial at all is an indication of its efforts to show new transparency in its inner workings. Benedict could have pardoned Gabriele as soon as he was arrested or charged, precluding any trial from getting off the ground. Instead he allowed the trial to go ahead, evidence of the "courage" the Vatican is showing to be more transparent, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi has said.

He called such transparency unprecedented for the Vatican and likened it to the Holy See's recent decision to submit its financial institutions to outside scrutiny by the Council of Europe's Moneyval committee.

Sweet Dog Nurses Kitten Back to Heath | Babble Pets

iStock 000014520803XSmall 300x204 Sweet Dog Takes In an Abandoned Kitten and Nurses It Back to Heath

not the actual dog & cat in the story, but they're cute too

There are sometimes I am so over the sad stories I hear in the news ? both human news and pet news. It seems to be all we hear lately and well, that can start breaking our hearts the more we hear them.

Then, once in a while I come across a story that just warms my heart. It stands out from the rest of the sad news and can remind me that the world is a super sweet place.

A story came out a few days ago from?Minnesota and it involves two of the cutest creatures on the planet ? a dog and a tiny kitten.

A woman named Pat Weber owns a barn in?Jordan, about 40 miles southwest of Minneapolis and was enjoying the day with her grandson on September 24th, 2012. He was playing in the barn when he found a tiny kitten ? only about 2 inches long.

Weber says the tiny kitten was ?ice cold? but after feeling it move, she wrapped it up in a warm towel and brought it inside. That?s when the story gets adorable (promise, this isn?t a sad story about a forgotten kitten).

Weber has a 4-year old dog named?Mittens (aaw!) and when she heard the tiny kitten start to meow, she was interested. The tiny kitten nuzzled into Mittens, who started to lick her, and the kitten started?suckling, nursing on Mittens who hasn?t had her own litter for 2 years.

It took about 3 days for Mittens to start to produce milk according to Pat and ever since, Mittens has been a loving adopted mother to the tiny grey kitten who has been named Bootsie.

To see the actual cat and dog in the story, head to abc local and check out the cute!

No companion in supernova debris

Explosion probably resulted from two white dwarfs

Web edition : 5:44 pm

access The bubble-shaped remnant of SN 1006, a type 1a supernova, reveals that two white dwarf stars probably triggered the massive stellar explosion.X-ray: NASA, CXC, G. Cassam-Chena? and J. Hughes et al/Rutgers Univ.; Radio: NRAO, AUI, NSF, GBT, K. Dyer, R. Maddalena and T. Cornwell/VLA; Optical: F. Winkler/Middlebury College, NOAO, AURA, NSF, CTIO, Schmidt/DSS

The bubble-shaped remnant of SN 1006, a type 1a supernova, reveals that two white dwarf stars probably triggered the massive stellar explosion, which went off more than a millennium ago.

Type 1a supernovas ignite when a white dwarf steals too much mass from an orbiting companion star???though the population of objects that serves as victim to such stellar burgling is uncertain.

A team of astronomers searching SN 1006?s 60-light-year-wide remnant for a large companion (which would now be zooming away from the explosion?s epicenter) came up empty. The result, published in the Sept. 27 Nature, suggests either that the explosion involved two white dwarf stars, both of which were obliterated by the blast, or that the doomed dwarf?s companion was smaller than the sun.

Schwarzenegger: Shriver changed tune on recall run

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Arnold Schwarzenegger says his wife, Maria Shriver, was told to "snap out of it" by her mother for her attempts to persuade him against running for California governor in 2003, a conversation that ultimately opened the door to his successful candidacy.

Eunice Shriver told her daughter that her husband would be "angry for the rest of his life" if she stopped his ambitions, Schwarzenegger writes in his new autobiography, "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story."

The former governor says in the book that he had decided against running to recall Gov. Gray Davis after his wife implored him not to for the sake of their family. Maria Shriver announced his decision to their four children.

But he writes that when Maria Shriver told her mother about her efforts to thwart Schwarzenegger's political ambitions, Eunice told her daughter that women in their family "always support the men when they want to do something." Schwarzenegger says he didn't know about the conversation at the time, but learned of it later.

Maria Shriver then softened her stance, paving the way for Schwarzenegger to announce his candidacy on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," where he says he felt most comfortable.

The announcement came after a week of wavering. Schwarzenegger says before he headed to the TV appearance, his wife handed him two pieces of paper with talking points she had written: one in case he decided to run, another in case he decided not to.

He writes that Shriver went on to become a key ally and adviser to his campaign and eventual governorship.

Schwarzenegger has often said that Maria's mother and her father, Sargent Shriver, were essential to his eventual decision to seek public office, and the most "extraordinary human beings I've ever met." But he also writes in the book that he often teased his wife that the close-knit Democratic Kennedy clan was "like a bunch of clones" because there was such conformity among them.

A spokesman for Shriver, Matthew DiGirolamo, declined to comment on the contents of the book.

"Total Recall" will officially be published next week. The Associated Press purchased an early copy.

The book is part of an effort by the onetime "Mr. Universe" and Hollywood action star to rebrand himself after leaving office with a mixed record and subsequent embarrassing revelations about a fling he had with the family's housekeeper. Schwarzenegger, who fathered a son with the housekeeper, says he also let boy down.

Schwarzenegger, 65, said he avoided telling his wife for years about the boy, who is now a teenager, even when Shriver asked him, partly because of his longtime penchant for secrecy, and his fear that the news would become public and undermine his political career. He told his wife in January 2011, when she confronted him the day after he left office.

In an interview with "60 Minutes" scheduled to air Sunday, Schwarzenegger said having sex with his housekeeper was "the stupidest thing" he ever did to his now-estranged wife and caused great pain to her and their four children. CBS aired excerpts of the interview Friday.

"I think it was the stupidest thing I've done in the whole relationship. It was terrible. I inflicted tremendous pain on Maria and unbelievable pain on the kids," Schwarzenegger tells "60 Minutes."

Schwarzenegger says he also let down the son he fathered with the housekeeper.

Shriver filed for divorce in July.

In his book, the usually ebullient Schwarzenegger admits to some loneliness, even though he packed his schedule with speeches, projects and movie-making after Shriver and the children moved out of the house. He said his career had been fun for 30 years because he shared it with Maria.

They had done everything together, he writes.

The former GOP governor also writes about a 2003 White House meeting with Karl Rove in which the top GOP strategist told him the recall would not happen and instead introduced the actor to then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice as his pick to run for California governor in 2006.

Schwarzenegger felt snubbed.

He asks, "How could Rove have been so wrong?"

Rove's office said he was traveling Friday and could not be reached for comment.

Rice's chief of staff at Stanford University, Georgia Godfrey, said Rice cannot recall "any conversation on this subject."

"She has stated many times in the past that she has no desire to run for public office and those sentiments have still not changed," Godfrey said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press.

Six Tips for Email Marketing That Work | Business 2 Community

Six Tips for Email Marketing That WorkReturn the wreath and cancel the hearse ? despite what you might?have heard, email marketing is not dead.

Statistics?show that:

  • Email is the preferred method of commercial communication by 74% of all online adults.
  • 63% of mobile email users check their account a minimum of once a day.

True, consumers got wise to email marketing being used as a channel to push products or services, but it?s still a viable medium for creating awareness. What?s more, it?s now completely mobile too, through the proliferation of Smartphones, tablets and other portable devices.

Here?s how to ensure your email marketing campaign works:

1. Choose the right?Email Service Provider

The key to choosing an Email Service Provider is reliability. Whether it?s uptime (remember, 99.5% uptime is two?days??annual downtime), helpdesk support, response time, back-up, monitoring or compatibility, it?s important to research first and be sure you are getting an ESP that can handle the demands your email marketing will put upon it.

?The software should always work, no hiccups or quirks. And the phone should always be picked up by the ESP, as an example for capable and active support.?

Jordie van Rijn,?Email Vendor Selection

2. Define your mailing lists

Untargeted email marketing campaigns increase costs by 3.6 times as much as targeted campaigns.

?Batch and blast? email marketing is dead.?Long live segmentation. Analyse your database and cross-reference with subscriber information. Segment into groups dependent upon buying behaviour, demographic, response history and stage in the buying process. Hitting the right people at the right time encourages the desired action and a sense of trust can be achieved through personalisation, increasing brand awareness.

Personalisation in the message has a 2.2% higher?click-through rate than personalisation in the subject line. And a 1.9% higher click-through rate than personalisation in both the message and subject line.

3. Choose a strong content style

Building awareness is key. Align the content of your emails to the individual you are addressing, as per segmentation. Be different ? 91% of email users have unsubscribed from a company email they previously opted?in to. Avoid ?push? selling, offer value and don?t give cause to unsubscribe.

Ten?second case study: Groupon attracted attention not only for the success of its email marketing, but also the unique and quirky style of its content. Some may find it irritating, but it certainly got them noticed and has gone on to be one of the most successful email marketing campaigns ever.

4. Choose compelling subject lines

Your subject line is the first thing a lead will see and can mean the difference between opening and deleting. Make them powerful, make them compelling,?arouse curiosity, test different wording and analyse response data. Keep them pointed.

Click-through rates?by subject line length (characters)

  • 4-15 ?: ?3.1%
  • 16-27 ?: ?4%
  • 28-39 ?: ?3.9%
  • 40-50 ?: ?3.3%
  • 51+ ?: ?1.9%

5. Follow best practice

  • Avoid words known to trigger spam filters.
  • Always offer the opportunity to unsubscribe, even though it?s the last thing you want.
  • Keep links blue ? everybody recognises blue links. Don?t allow confusion to get in the way of action.
  • Familiarity breeds contempt ? exhibit self control. An unrelenting stream of emails will only encourage spam reports and unsubscribing. Once a month is most effective. Make each email count.
  • Add social share buttons. Studies show that emails including a social share button enjoy a 115% higher click-through rate?than those that don?t.
  • Proof read your communications ? typos look sloppy?and?unprofessional and are guaranteed to turn prospective leads off.

6. Measure the results of email marketing campaigns

Measure the effectiveness of your email marketing campaigns. Use analytics to establish who clicked on what and when. Ignore open rates; it?s the mobile age, yet iPhones measure a deleted email as one opened ? go figure. Remain on top of all metrics*; invaluable intelligence can be drawn from:

  • Click-Through Rates (CTR) ? The number of recipients who?clicked on a link or links in the email.
  • Sharing Rates ? The proportion sharing or forwarding the email to a friend.
  • Conversion Rates ? The?percentage of those who clicked on a link and went on to perform the desired action.
  • Revenue Per Email ? A calculation of the ROI, dividing total revenue by number of emails sent.

*Requires integration of your analytics platform and Email Service Provider.

And finally?

Follow up every lead. Some 90% of business owners?don?t bother and lose the sale to a competitor who does. The consumer wants to hear from you ? that?s why they opted?in to your email campaign.

Research has shown that lead nurturing can result in a 375% boost in sales.

AMD Trinity desktop chips due next week, promise Core i5-matching power at Core i3 price

AMD to release Trinity desktop chips next week, promises Core i5 power for a Core i3 priceBeing the industry underdog means youre always in need of a punchy pitch Fortunately, the marketing around AMDs latest processors the longawaited Trinity APUs for desktop PCs is brutally simple For something like the cost of an Ivy Bridge Core i3, you can get an overclockable A105800K that, were told, belongs in the same weight category as an Ivy Bridge Core i5 with HD4000 integrated graphics In other words, and although exact pricing wont be revealed until the full stack of A10, A8 and A6 processors hit shelves next week, buyers of lowpower PCs like allinones and HTPCs could potentially save around $xx by going with AMD instead of Intel Such a claim just cries out to be tested, which is exactly what we try to do in the video after the break albeit under the auspices of AMD and solely in relation to the game Sleeping Dogs The upshot of the video is that the A10 runs that title at medium settings and 16x10 resolution at almost 30 fps Throw in some conservative GPU and memory overclocking while sticking with the stock cooler and chip will readily stretch to 1920 x 1080 at 37 fps By contrast, an Ivy Bridge Core i5 struggles to get beyond slowmo 10 fps, and of course you cant overclock it without spending extra on unlocked K variant of the chip something AMD sells at no premium whatsoever But thats just one game and moreover one game on a chip that isnt especially targetted at gaming so much as allround entertainment and productivity ie the kinds of customers who dont want to spend $100 extra on a discrete graphics card We need full benchmarks covering more scenarios and general computing performance, and a number of specialist sites will be releasing such data today see the More Coverage links below, with fuller reviews following on October 2nd at which point well do our regular review roundup

Being the industry underdog means you're always in need of a punchy pitch. Fortunately, AMD's latest briefing to journalists in London yesterday contained exactly that: for something like the cost of an Intel Core i3 you'll be able to pick up an overclockable Trinity A10-5800K which, we're told, belongs in the same weight class as a Core i5 with HD 4000 graphics. Exact pricing won't be revealed until the full stack of A10, A8, A6 and A4 processors hits shelves next week, but the top-end A10 will likely cost around $130, based on recent leaks and a glance at what Newegg currently charges for an i3. Unluckily, however, whereas Ivy Bridge was compatible with some previous-generation motherboards, Trinity will require the purchase of a new Socket FM2 motherboard.

The claim of performance parity with the Core i5 just cries out to be tested, but we'll have to wait until early October before we can round up verdicts from full reviews on specialist sites. In the meantime, check out the More Coverage links below for some early previews. Also, if you require something more directly head-to-head with an Intel chip, then that's exactly what you'll find in the video after the break, albeit under AMD's auspices and solely in relation to a single game, Sleeping Dogs. As you'll see, there's nothing to turn hardcore gamers against discrete graphics cards, and there are no clues about non-gaming performance (which is arguably more relevant on an APU-powered system). But the quad-core A10-5800K does offer plenty of scope for escapism on a low-power HTPC or all-in-one. Indeed, the more expensive Core i5 is left for dust, not least because it's locked -- unlike AMD, Intel charges a premium for its overclockable K-denoted chips. We'll add further preview links as they become available.

Update: Just added HotHardware's preview, which shows that the A10 really does game as well as our video suggests in addition to providing a mostly fluid computing experience. As mentioned, however, it's impossible to reach a final verdict until AMD allows sites to publish full benchmarks next week.

Outsourcing, China and the Presidential Campaign | Economy In ...

chineseimports

In speeches and television ads, President Obama and Governor Romney each?claims they would do a better standing up for American workers against unfair? trade with China. However, when it comes to outsourcing both have sins to? repent.

Just about everyone who has had a choice between buying an American-made? product or an import?a car, dress or bottle of wine?must admit that? international trade based on national differences in know how, labor costs and?natural resources can help us all live better.

If Americans expect folks to sell Boeing aircraft and Microsoft Windows? abroad, then they must be prepared to outsource some of what they buy directly,? or through firms assembling products here.

The problem is not outsourcing but importing products that could be made as?or more inexpensively in the United States. That happens when: U.S. policy? throws up unnecessary barriers to domestic business; foreign governments? subsidize inefficient production, or simply keep out competitive American? products; or U.S. firms have an inappropriate bias toward foreign sourcing.

Those swell the trade deficit, which imposes great costs, and both President? Obama and Governor Romney each share some guilt.

President Obama?s tough restrictions on oil and gas development in the Gulf,? off the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts and in Alaska do not reduce U.S. petroleum? consumption but merely shift exploration and production to costlier and riskier? locations abroad. EPA limits on CO2 emissions encourage manufacturers to locate? in China, where similar regulations do not apply. Both kill U.S. jobs without an? environmental benefit.

China keeps its products artificially cheap, and encourages U.S.? manufacturers to locate production in the Middle Kingdom by suppressing the? value of its currency, imposing high tariffs and throwing up administrative? barriers to US goods and services.
In the wake of the financial crisis,? Beijing required that its stimulus money to be spent in China, and yet President? Obama permitted billions of US stimulus money to be spent in China? and elsewhere.

For example, GE, whose CEO heads the President?s Job?s Council, used stimulus? grants to purchase components for U.S. wind turbines from the Chengxi Shipyard?a? state controlled company that builds vessels for the Chinese Navy?even though an? American supplier offered to match its price.

President Obama could have excluded those products?either through the initial? legislation or by executive order?without violating WTO rules but chose not to? do so. More broadly, he has not taken aim at China?s undervalued currency,? which affords exporters as much as a 40 percent price advantage when selling in? the United States.

Bain Capital, the firm founded by Governor Romney, has invested in companies? that have relocated jobs to China. More broadly private equity firms have an? inherent bias toward outsourcing that is often neither helpful to the businesses? they reorganize nor healthy for the U.S. economy.

Essentially, private equity purchases distressed businesses, and looks for? quick profits by slashing wasteful employment?unnecessary jobs that would be? lost anyway if the firms failed?and replacing ossified management. However,? seeking big returns in a brief period, private equity managers are more likely? to sell off valuable brands and patents to raise quick cash, and to offshore? manufacturing that supports domestic R&D and could contribute greatly to the? future value of the firm and broader U.S. competitiveness and employment.

US tax policies offer substantial incentives to private equity reorganization? of businesses by taxing their partners? income at about half the rate that many? corporations, small businesses and professionals pay. Simply, those tax breaks? give the economy more private equity reorganizations than are good for U.S.? growth and jobs creation.

Unnecessary outsourcing is responsible for at least half the $600 billion? U.S. trade deficit. Slashing that deficit in half would boost domestic demand? and GDP by about $500 billion and add 5 million jobs.

Export and import-competing industries spend at least four times as much on? R&D as the private business sector as a whole. Reducing outsourcing, by? increasing R&D, could boost U.S. GDP by one or two percentage points. A US? economy growing at 3 or 4 percent a year, instead of its current 2 percent,? would have far fewer budget problems at the federal and state levels, and far? more resources to address issues like health care, the solvency of social? security and finance an adequate national defense and space exploration.

DETROIT While more men than women develop kidney stones and other obstructions in the urinary tract, women are more than twice as likely to suffer infections related to the condition, according to a new study led by Henry Ford Hospital researchers.

The researchers also found significantly higher rates of complications following one of two urgent treatments for the effects of urolithiasis or stones in the kidneys and urinary tract but stressed that this finding is based on preliminary and more research is needed.

The findings were published today in the peer-reviewed European Urology, the official publication of the European Association of Urology.

Not only did the study find that women are far more susceptible to infection when they develop urolithiasis, it also showed that the incidence of infection, including sepsis a potentially fatal inflammation throughout the body touched off by infection is on the rise.

The rate of related deaths, however, held steady, whom the researchers said is likely a result of "broad improvement in the management of sepsis and the critically ill."

"The research study was conducted because the rate of infection related to urolithiasis was not known, and evidence was unclear about the best method for treating it," said the study's lead author, Jesse Sammon, DO, Urology Resident at Henry Ford's Vattikuti Urology Institute.

Nearly 400,000 adult patients hospitalized with infected urolithiasis from 1999-2009 were identified in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, the largest all-payer inpatient care database in the U.S. Researchers then determined how often they were treated with either of two techniques retrograde ureteral catheterization, or RUC, and percutaneous nephrostomy, or PCN.

In RUC, a catheter is inserted through the ureter to drain blocked urine and relieve pressure on the kidney. With PCN, a surgical instrument is used to pierce the patient's back, and then the kidney.

During the 10-year period studied by the researchers, the incidence of infected urolithiasis in women increased from 15.5 per 100,000, to 27.6. In men, there was an increase of 7.8 per 100,000, to 12.1. Related sepsis rose from 6.9 percent of urolithiasis patients to 8.5 percent, and severe sepsis increased from 1.7 percent to 3.2 percent.

While higher rates of sepsis, severe sepsis and prolonged hospitals stays were found to be associated to PCN, the researchers cautioned that certain important variables required for comparison are not included in available data.

So conclusions that might be used to guide current and future treatment options would be hypothetical, they said, "demonstrating the pressing need for further study."

BC's Northern Health Takes an Enlightened Position on Obesity | Dr ...

British Columbia?s Northern Health authority has released one of the most balanced and enlightened public health position document on obesity that I have yet seen from any public agency.

Moving well beyond the populistic, but simplistic, stereotype-promoting focus on?shaming, blaming,?banning, taxing and other ?negative? responses to the obesity epidemic, this document takes an almost post-modern position on obesity prevention and control that could (and probably should) serve as a Northern ?light? to other agencies.

Just to quote some of the far-reaching statements that one certainly does not often read in such documents on obesity (hold your breath - here they come):

? Health can occur at a variety of sizes.

  • Support the development and maintenance of eating competence across the life cycle.
  • Promote enjoyable, active lives and support building lifestyles that integrate active transportation, active play?and active family time.
  • Support the achievement of positive body image for all.
  • Support the message that healthy bodies exist in a diversity of shapes and sizes.

? Weight is not a complete and inclusive measure of health.

  • Support a health-promoting approach; prioritize reducing risk factors and weight-related complications.
  • Support optimal growth and development of children and youth.
  • In children and youth, support longitudinal growth monitoring as part of primary care. Weight divergence,?particularly weight acceleration (rather than an absolute weight or percentile), requires further investigation.
  • Promote that all sizes are accepted and treated with respect.
  • Support that weight bias is a bullying issue; it may be overcome using awareness, education and other?supportive measures.
  • Promote a do no harm approach in measures to support health at all sizes to prevent increases in negative body?image, disordered eating and disordered activity.

? Obesity should be prevented, treated and managed using a do no harm approach.

  • Support and promote healthy eating: make the healthy eating choice the easy choice.
  • Support and promote active lifestyles: make the active choice the easy choice.
  • Support drawing attention to obesogenic environments where we live, work, learn, play and are cared for.
  • Support a graduated approach to healthy lifestyles; encourage actions toward improved health and well-being?at all weights.
  • Support and promote the use of the Edmonton Obesity Staging System as a medical approach to manage obese?patients.
  • Promote success as improved health and stabilized weight with attention to competent eating, active living?and positive body image.

Management Principles

  • Focus on improving health and achieving best weight.
  • Obesity prevention is easier than management.
  • Employ a do-no-harm approach (to avoid increasing disordered eating/activity).
  • Address weight bias.
  • BMI is a screening tool to be used cautiously.

Needless to say, I am delighted to see the themes commonly found in many of my posts (including ?best weight?, the ?Edmonton Obesity Staging System?, the limitations of BMI, the multifactorial nature of obesity, etc.) reflected in this policy document.

In fact, it may well be that this document sets a new ?record? for the speed with which some of these concepts have found themselves reflected in a policy document. Thus, for example, the ?definitive? studies on the Edmonton Obesity Staging System, published in the CMAJ and APNM, are barely 12 months old - definitely a ?research-to-policy? time record as far as I am aware.

But please read the summary or the entire position statement for yourself - I certainly appreciate your comments.

I am sure the folks at Northern Health would likewise welcome your feedback.

China jails ex-police chief, closes in on disgraced politician

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese court jailed ex-police chief Wang Lijun for 15 years on Monday after finding him guilty on four charges, including seeking to conceal the murder of a British businessman, in a scandal that felled the ambitious politician, Bo Xilai.

The court in Chengdu in southwest China said Wang received the sentence for "bending the law for selfish ends, defection, abuse of power and bribe-taking", according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.

The court found that Wang, the former police chief of Chongqing municipality in southwest China, tried to cover up the murder of a British businessman Neil Heywood in November 2011 by Gu Kailai, the wife of Bo, one of China's most controversial politicians.

With Gu already jailed, and Wang now joining her, the ruling Communist Party must next decide what to do with Bo, whose contentious downfall has dogged a leadership handover due to take place at a party congress as early as next month.

Wang sealed his fate at a trial a week ago by admitting the charges, according to an official account of the hearing published by Xinhua news agency. Only official media outlets were allowed inside the courtroom.

The main charges stem from a cascade of events triggered by Heywood's murder. Officials have said the murder itself arose from a business dispute in Chongqing, the riverside municipality that Bo and Wang made into their fiefdom.

After first helping Gu evade suspicion of poisoning Heywood, Wang then kept evidence of the murder, according to the official account of Wang's trial. In late January, Wang confronted Bo with the allegation that Gu was suspected of killing Heywood. But Wang was "angrily rebuked and had his ears boxed".

Days later, Bo stripped Wang of his post as Chongqing police chief, and Wang, fearing for his safety, fled to the U.S. consulate in Chengdu where he hid for more than 24 hours until Chinese officials coaxed him out.

In August, Gu was sentenced to a suspended death sentence, which effectively means life in prison.

The Chinese government has not said what will happen to Bo, who in March was sacked as party boss and in April suspended from the ruling Communist Party's Politburo, a powerful decision-making council with two dozen active members.

Scientists Speak Out Against Wasting Helium In Balloons

Build more helium extraction plants in natural gas refineries.

Really.

The reason helium was (relatively) cheap was that the US built a nice large extraction plant at a natural gas field with a very high concentration of helium. That field is starting to run out, so prices are naturally going up.

Helium is not, however, limited to that one field. There are many other natural gas fields with varying concentrations of helium, and all you need to do is add a cryogenic helium extraction plant to a natural gas refinery to pull that helium out of the existing gas feeds. This is already happening in a few places, and with current technology, it's not that expensive to build more plants. It's only cost effective in a field with higher concentrations of helium - but there are quite a few of those.

The United States has proven helium reserves of about fifty years... and unproven reserves of about a thousand times that. ("Proven" means "we know it's there," and "unproven" means "we're pretty sure it's there, but haven't gotten around to it yet for economic or legal reasons").

(AP Photo/Julie Jacobson)

(AP) ? Democrats say Mitt Romney manipulated his deductions to keep his overall 2011 federal income tax rate below a certain level for political purposes. The Republican presidential nominee is certain to face new questions about his finances.

Romney and his wife, Ann, donated roughly $4 million to charities last year, but they only claimed a deduction of $2.25 million on their tax return, filed with the Internal Revenue Service on Friday.

Romney made $13.7 million last year and paid $1.94 million in federal income taxes, giving him an effective tax rate of 14.1 percent. That was a bit above the 13.9 percent rate paid on 2010 income.

More precisely, the returns showed that the couple paid $1,935,708 in taxes on income of $13,696,951.

Democrats quickly leaped on the documents, saying Romney had claimed fewer deductions than he was entitled to just to keep his rate at such a level. Romney told reporters in August he had never paid below 13 percent in taxes in any given year over the past 20. Had he taken the full charitable deduction, it would have pushed his tax liability below 13 percent.

"The information released today reveals that Mitt Romney manipulated one of the only two years of tax returns he's seen fit to show the American people - and then only to 'conform' with his public statements. That raises the question: What else in those returns has Romney manipulated?" said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

Stephanie Cutter, deputy campaign manager for President Barack Obama, said the release of Romney's 2011 tax returns "confirms what we already knew - that people like Mitt Romney pay a lower tax rate than many middle-class families because of a set of complex loopholes and tax shelters only available to those at the top. Yet, Mitt Romney still wants to give multimillionaires an additional $250,000 tax cut at the expense of middle-class taxpayers who will see their taxes go up."

Romney, one of the wealthiest candidates ever to seek the presidency, paid taxes at a rate lower than taxpayers whose income was mostly from wages, which can be taxed at higher rates.

Romney's taxes have emerged as a key issue during the 2012 presidential race. He released his 2010 returns in January, but he continues to decline to disclose returns from previous years ? including those while he worked at Bain Capital, the private equity firm he co-founded.

The Obama campaign and other Democrats have pushed for fuller disclosures, reminding the Republican candidate that his father, George Romney, released a dozen years of returns when he ran for president.

Overall, the Romneys' main tax return and separate forms for blind trusts totaled more than 800 pages. The blind-trust income came from hedge funds and other complex investment vehicles. The couple also reported $3.5 million in income "from sources outside the United States," citing "various countries." Their forms included filings on holdings in Switzerland, Ireland, Germany and the Cayman Islands.

The Obama campaign accused Romney anew of profiting from millions invested overseas and "loopholes and tax shelters only available to those at the top."

Apparently hoping to resolve basic questions voters might have, the Romney campaign released a letter from his accountants saying that in the 20 years prior to 2010 the Romneys paid an average annual effective rate of 20.2 percent, never lower than 13.66 percent. On average, middle-income families ? those making from $50,000 to $75,000 a year ? pay 12.8 percent of their income in federal taxes, according to Congress' Joint Committee on Taxation. But many pay a higher rate.

The former Massachusetts governor, whose wealth is estimated as high as $250 million, is aggressively competing with Obama for the support of middle-class voters.

Obama's own tax return for last year showed that he and his wife, Michelle, paid $162,074 in federal taxes on $789,674 in adjusted gross income, an effective tax rate of 20.5 percent. Their income plunged from $1.7 million in 2010, with declining sales of the president's books. In 2009, the Obamas reported income of $5.5 million, fueled by the best-selling books.

The Romneys' tax bill could have been lower. They gave $2.6 million in cash to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the documents show. They gave just over $2 million in non-cash charitable contributions ? including donations of stock holdings in Domino's Pizza, Dunkin Donuts and Warner Chilcott ? to a family trust.

They could have claimed more in deductions, said Brad Malt, the trustee of Romney's blind trust, but the couple "limited their deductions of charitable contributions to conform to the governor's statement in August, based on the January estimate of income, that he paid at least 13 percent in income taxes in each of the last 10 years."

Romney seemed to be painted into a corner by that statement, which came in reaction to Senate Democratic leader Reid's claim to have heard that the Republican had paid no taxes in some years.

Romney will surely be reminded by the Democrats that he also said in August, defending his right to pay no more taxes than he owed: "I don't pay more than are legally due, and frankly if I had paid more than are legally due I don't think I'd be qualified to become president."

The decision of Romney's trustee to limit his use of charitable deductions in 2011 in order to keep to the candidate's claim that he paid no less than 13 percent taxes in any year over the last decade raised the eyebrows of several tax law experts. They noted that the trustee's use of numerous tax strategies gives Romney the rare ability to loosen or limit his tax payments at will.

"It's interesting he didn't take the full charitable deduction," said Victor Fleischer, a University of Colorado law professor who has testified before Congress urging tightened oversight of private equity firms. "You're in a pretty lucky position when you can pay more tax" to get up to a 13 percent rate. Fleischer and several others said it was doubtful Romney could later take any unclaimed deductions in future years.

He appears to be physically qualified by any measure.

The campaign released a separate report Friday ? by Romney's longtime physician, Dr. Randall Gaz of Massachusetts General Hospital ? that said he is healthy and ready to meet the rigorous demands of the presidency.

The report said Romney's heart appears healthy, and he takes a baby aspirin and medicine to treat high cholesterol to help keep it that way. He doesn't smoke or drink. And his resting heart rate is a low 40 beats per minute, in the range of well-trained athletes and reminiscent of President George W. Bush, who also had a low resting rate.

Romney is 6 feet 1? inches tall and weighs 184 pounds.

As for his taxes, the Romneys had obtained a filing extension beyond the usual April 15 tax deadline.

Most of their income is from investments held in a blind trust, and campaign aides have stressed that he makes no decisions on how his money is invested. Capital gains and dividend interest is now generally taxed at 15 percent whereas the top marginal rate for income from wages is 35 percent.

The Romneys reported $6.8 million in capital gains, such as from the sale of stocks and other securities, and $6.37 million from dividends and taxable interest.

Romney's vast fortune and his long association with Bain Capital have been much discussed this year.

Several tax law experts said Friday that his newly released tax returns would not be much help in resolving critics' questions about his sprawling finances ? whether he used aggressive tax-deferral strategies, what might be the specifics and tax advantages of his numerous offshore investments, what was the source of his massive retirement account and what are the details behind his now-closed $3 million Swiss bank account.

Analysts said details about his investments could emerge only if Romney provided far more of his tax returns ? including files dating back to his years at Bain, the private firm he left in 2001. Romney, who initially refused to disclose any tax returns, has drawn the line at providing those from the past two years.

"All the important compliance and policy questions relating to Romney's personal tax matters relate to the past," said Edward D. Kleinbard, a law professor at the University of Southern California and former chief of staff of Congress' Joint Committee on Taxation. "The issue has never been Romney's 2011 tax return ? in fact, it is a distraction to the real issues."

Only multiple returns would provide details about Romney's $100 million retirement account and how it grew, Kleinbard said. He also said earlier returns would be crucial in knowing how often he paid gift tax on family trusts.

Joseph Bankman, a Stanford University law school professor and expert on tax law, said, "It's the Bain years we'd really need to know to have a full assessment of his tax strategies." Bankman said that the 2010 and 2011 returns "only raised these questions, but they can't provide real answers."

The Romneys applied a $1.5 million tax refund to their 2012 estimated tax payments.

The couple reported $190,350 in book royalties and speaking fees. And Romney also reported $260,390 in income last year from serving on various boards of directors.

The Republican vice presidential nominee, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, and his wife, Janna, whose returns were also released Friday by the Romney campaign, paid $64,764 in taxes on $323,416 of adjusted gross income in 2011, for an effective rate of 20 percent.

Just over half of their income came from Ryan's congressional salary. Other income flowed from rental real estate and other investments, including a trust inherited by Janna Ryan. They donated $12,991 to charity, including to the Boy Scouts of America

Android App review: Falcon for Twitter

Falcon for Twitter Banner

Falcon for Twitter (beta) is a widget that aims to let you do all your everyday Twitter stuff directly from your homescreen, and I?m not just talking about reading and writing tweets. This clever little widget does so much more.

I know this is the traditional time of year to squabble about which operating system is best, and as an owner of Android and iOS devices I would like to sit on the fence on that one for now, however, I do beleive that one of the stand out features of Android is the ability to run widgets directly from your homescreen. The problem is that very few apps take full advantage of its capabilities.

This is where the clever developers who?ve come up with Falcon for Twitter have succeeded where so many others have failed.

Firstly, this is a beta version. I don?t normally like to recommend betas, as you have to remember that you?re using a test release that comes with the caveat that it may stop functioning correctly. However, I?ve been using Falcon for the past couple of months and I?ve had no problems with stability. In fact, every update has just brought more and more functionality, to the point where I just couldn?t wait any longer to sing its praises.

When you first install Falcon you get a few screens explaining exactly what you get. Once run you have to add the widget before doing anything else, because it?s not an app as such.

Once added and you?ve authenticated with Twitter you?re presented with a stylish black rectangular widget (theme is changeable) that soon populates with your Twitter timeline. Across the top are several controls:

a falcon head ? takes you to your full Twitter app, if installed (although I very rarely feel the need)
a numerical indicator ? how many tweets you have
a refresh button
a toggle to take you between your timeline and your mentions
a new tweet button
a menu button ? gives you access to your Twitter profile, direct messages, favourites, search and settings

The timeline is scrollable by swiping with your finger. Once a tweet is tapped the stand out features become obvious: the display changes, showing the tweet at the top and an area for displaying the contents of any links within it.

For example, if the tweet contains a link to a photo or video it will automatically load them high resolution. Not only that though, if there?s a link then it will load the web page within the widget ? no browser required. Want to navigate awy from that page? No problem, the widget continues to act like a browser.

Also within this window you will see any conversation history and get the ability to reply, retweet, favourite, and share the tweet.

Falcon for Twitter Tablet Desktop

All of this is happening without leaving your homescreen, so on a tablet you can still have your email and or?music widgets, for example, visable at the same time,?making good use of Android?s true multitasking capabilities.

(click thumbnails to see screenshots. Thanks to Ross for the loan of his grub!)

Of course, with any widget there are going to be limitations. For example, there is no access to trends or some of the more advanced features of Twitter, and, being a beta there are quite a few updates to download, but nothing that bothers me at all. In fact, I can?t remember the last time I launched my full Twitter client!

I?ve just re-read my review and I?ve realised that this may sound like some sort of advert, but best of all, Falcon is free and without adverts, so there?s no need for either party to be biased. I can assure you that this review is so positive because this widget is so good, and it just seems to keep getting better!

Falcon for Twitter beta is available in the Google play store, but please note that it?s for devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and above.
