One in three post-partum women suffers PTSD symptoms after giving birth: Natural births a major cause of post-traumatic stress, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Aug. 8, 2012) ? Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) develops in individuals who experience highly traumatizing situations such as terrorist attacks and car accidents, but symptoms can also come about after normal life events -- including childbirth.

A Tel Aviv University researcher has found that approximately one third of all post-partum women exhibit some symptoms of PTSD, and a smaller percentage develop full-blown PTSD following the ordeal of labor. This surprising finding indicates a relatively high prevalence of the disorder, says Prof. Rael Strous of TAU's Sackler Faculty of Medicine, who completed the study along with Dr. Inbal Shlomi Polachek of the Beer Yaakov Mental Health Center and Liat Harari and Micha Baum of the Sheba Medical Center.

Of those women who developed post-traumatic symptoms, 80 percent opted for natural childbirth without pain relief. Other significant factors identified include the woman's body image (including discomfort with being in an undressed state for the relatively prolonged period of labor and undergoing elective Caesarean sections), fear during labor, and complications in the present and earlier pregnancies and labors.

The study was published in IMAJ, the Israel Medical Association Journal.

A painful reality

The debate over whether or not childbirth qualifies as a "traumatic event" is still controversial. Although childbirth is not a sudden and unexpected event like an accident, childbirth is accompanied by a very real and justified fear of danger, as expectant mothers worry for not just their own safety but also for the health and well-being of their babies, says Prof. Strous.

Researchers interviewed 89 post-partum women between the ages of 20 and 40, first within 2 to 5 days after delivery and then again one month after delivery. They discovered that of these participants, 25.9 percent displayed symptoms of post-trauma, 7.8 percent suffered from partial post-trauma, and 3.4 percent exhibited symptoms of full-blown PTSD. Symptoms included flashbacks of the labor, the avoidance of discussion of the event, physical reactions such as heart palpitations during such discussions, and a reluctance to consider having another child.

According to Prof. Strous, one of the most influential factors was pain management during delivery. Of the women who experienced partial or full post-trauma symptoms, 80 percent had gone through a natural childbirth, without any form of pain relief. "The less pain relief there was, the higher the woman's chances of developing post-partum PTSD," he said. Of the women who did not develop any PTSD symptoms, only 48 percent experienced a natural childbirth.

A full 80 percent of the PTSD group reported feeling discomfort with being unclothed, and 67 percent had previous pregnancies which they described as traumatic. Fear of the labor itself, both in terms of expected pain levels and danger to themselves and their children, was also influential. The researchers discovered to their surprise that support during labor, in the form of a midwife or doula, had no impact when it came to avoiding post-traumatic symptoms. Factors such as socioeconomic and marital status, level of education, and religion also had no effect.

Reading the warning signs

Beyond gathering information about prevalence, Prof. Strous and his fellow researchers wanted to gain insight into possible risk factors for developing post-traumatic symptoms and ascertain methods for minimizing its impact. He suggests that doctors become familiar with the profile of women who are more disposed to suffer from post-traumatic symptoms, and be on the look-out for warning signs after labor. He also advocates additional research into the phenomenon to develop better treatment plans and making more resources available for affected women.

There are some immediate steps medical professionals can take, Prof. Strous says, including better counselling about pain relief and making sure that patients' bodies are properly covered during delivery. "Dignity is a factor that should be taken into account. It's an issue of ethics and professionalism, and now we can see that it does have physical and psychological ramifications," he says.

Political confessions: A mistake to admit mistakes?

Suppose the incumbent is facing an unhappy electorate. The change he?d promised four years ago hasn?t materialized, and the hope he?d stirred has curdled. Suppose the incumbent?s top campaign aides are convinced he needs to acknowledge that all has not gone well. What does he do?

If the incumbent is New York City Mayor John Lindsay, and the year is 1969, he sits on the steps of Gracie Mansion, the mayor?s official residence, and tapes what came to be known as the ?Lindsay Eats Crow? ad. (?Crow? was not the precise substance mentioned.) The ad itself conceded very little, and quickly trumped each mistake with successes.

?I guessed wrong on the weather before the city?s biggest snowstorm last winter,? he began. ?And that was a mistake. But I put 6,000 more cops on the street. And that was no mistake. The school strike went on too long, and we all made some mistakes. But I brought 225,000 more jobs to this town. And that was no mistake.?

Lindsay continued: ?The things that go wrong are what make this the second toughest job in America. But the things that go right are what make me still want it.?

I reach back not to celebrate the wisdom of Lindsay?s campaign team, of which I was a part. He had the advantages of a city caught up in the New York Mets? championship run, and of an opponent?City Comptroller Mario Procaccino?who made Rick Perry look like Cicero.

But the comparison raises a question about President Barack Obama?s re-election efforts: Does he need to say to voters, ?I?ve made mistakes?? And if so, how does he say it?

Obama has already admitted to some blunders along the way. He told Charlie Rose in a July 16 interview: "The mistake of my first term?couple of years?was thinking that this job was just about getting the policy right. And that's important. But the nature of this office is also to tell a story to the American people that gives them a sense of unity and purpose and optimism, especially during tough times."

To put it charitably, this won?t qualify as a mea culpa, since the subtext of this ?confessional? is backhanded: ?I didn?t figure out how to tell the country what I good job I?ve done.?

But if there is a sense in Obama?s inner circle that confession is good for the political soul, what might he say? (I?m excluding the offerings from his political adversaries, such as: ?I?m sorry I thought I could handle the job? or ?my apologies for forging my birth certificate and consorting with known terrorists.?)

Could he, for instance, concede that his Administration misjudged the severity of the global financial meltdown of September 2008? Others who served him have done so privately and even publicly (see Noam Scheiber?s ?The Escape Artist?,) arguing that the remedies offered however enormous, were insufficient to kick start the economy.

Obama hasn?t gone that far, but he did admit, during a July 6, 2011 CBS Twitter townhall, that one of the ?two things I would have done differently? includes ?preparing people better for how long the [economic] crisis was going to take.? He went on: ?I think even I didn?t realize the magnitude, because most economists didn?t realize the magnitude of the recession until fairly far into it.? But, still, he?s not saying his strategy was off. In a climate where ?stimulus? is the policy that dare not speak its name, it is risky at best to argue: ?we should have spent more? (unless you assume that Paul Krugman?s approval is the key to swing voters in Ohio and Florida).

Could he say that, given the severity of the Great Recession, he should have tabled health care until conditions had improved? That?s a difficult course, since health care reform is the signature achievement of his term. Moreover, it?s not at all clear that putting health care aside would have won him more running room to deal with the economy.

Perhaps the most tempting target of opportunity would be for the President to say: ?I misjudged the tenor of Washington; I really thought there was room to cross party lines, but I did not see just how intransigent the Republican opposition was??an oblique way of pointing the finger at Republican obstinacy.

In fact, Obama has tried this. In the same Charlie Rose interview above, the president said: ?The one thing that has frustrated me the most over the past four years?is I?ve not been able to change the atmosphere in Washington.? He went on: ?I think there?s no doubt, that I underestimated the degree to which, in this town, politics trumps problem solving?my expectation was that we would see more cooperation.?

There is meat in this approach. A staunch conservative like Utah Sen. Robert Bennett was denied the chance to run in the GOP primary two years ago for the sin of cooperating with the President. Press accounts detail how caucuses forced Republicans to cease exploring health care and other matters with Democratic colleagues. And it?s hard to misread the famous works of GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell when he said: ?The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term President.?

The problem for Obama is that, whatever the merits, this ?confession? looks to have little political punch. In 2010, voters responded to Republican intransigence by giving them an historic mid-term election triumph. If polls are any guide, the public seems to have a ?plague on both your houses? view, taking it as a matter of faith that both parties are out to hurt the other guy whenever they can; they are likely not to be shocked or outraged that one party set out to derail the agenda of the other guy.

But, even more important, is the fact that nothing matters more in this election than the economy. Owning up to smaller missteps such as these won?t really matter like they did in Lindsay?s day. This time around, the big issue is the economy and why it isn?t improving. But Obama can?t possibly admit any real economic mistakes or it could spell political suicide. It?s Obama?s misfortune that a relatively minor transgression, like guessing wrong about the weather, won?t be enough to impact voters. The electorate often seems willing to give a ?we?re all human? pass to a public official, provided the mistake isn?t egregious enough. But today, given the all-consuming economy issue, voters just don?t care much about those minor mistakes.

After all, it wasn?t John Lindsay, but another New York Mayor, Fiorello LaGuardia, who offered the most appealing apology ever, when he said: ?When I make a mistake, it?s a beaut.?

Highlighting the Benefits of Rollcage ? What Ever It Is

What exactly is a rollcage?
Rollcage is an in-built device that is used for protecting the car interior. Such cages are specifically installed in modern day racing cars. After all, chances of accidents are more in these racing cars, isn?t it so? In case there is a roll over, rollcage can prevent the passenger from serious tumbling. These cages can help in restricting the impact of injury to driver in case of serious accidents.
Roll cage holds passengers firmly and prevents from any accident impact. Rollcage is usually prepared according to user specification. In fact, every racing unit relies heavily upon these devices. It not only protects the car occupants. Rather, it also stiffens the entire car chassis.
For regular use vehicles, roll bars can be installed for the purpose of protection against certain rollovers. Such bars run through head rest of the vehicle while providing suitable support to shoulder and back. The Mercedes Benz R129 (1989 edition) was probably the first car to install roll cages at the interior portion. It fitted the cages more discreetly within the car interior. The cage ran beneath the car body, while remain hidden from everyone?s sight. Due to the presence of extremely powerful sensors, the cage can easily detect the chances of rollover. This results in immediate locking. Although loops are quite loose, but in case of rollover they lock together tightly while forming a cage.
Anyone who is extremely fond of rash driving or racing, need to definitely install a roll cage or at least a bar to minimize the accident effect. In fact, installing such a device will help in saving life of passengers during serious rollover and accidents. For installation, it is always better to consult an expert technician

Nielsen On U.S. Mobile Shopping: eBay?s App Attracts The Most Users, Shopkick Keeps Them Around Longer

cart-app2As mobile payments continue to become more commonplace among retailers, smartphone consumers are already showing a pretty strong appetite for mobile shopping on their devices. According to a June 2012 survey among 5,000 Android and iPhone users in the U.S., Nielsen found that just over 50% of them have used a native shopping app on their phones. The analysts say that in total some 48 million U.S. consumers have used shopping apps, on average, 17 times in the month. In terms of what apps are "selling" the best, the strongest players on mobile are those that are strongest online, with eBay, Amazon and Groupon the top three mobile shopping sites at 13.2 million, 12.1 million and 12 million unique users respectively. But, when it comes to time spent on those apps, it's the less-popular Shopkick that is keeping users engaged the longest.

Swarm of thousands of bees delay Pittsburgh flight

IMPERIAL, Pa. (AP) ? A beekeeper says he had to be called into gather up a swarm of thousands of bees that delayed a Delta Air Lines flight from Pittsburgh International Airport to New York.

Master beekeeper Stephen Repasky tells KDKA-TV (http://cbsloc.al/PqjswF ) he was called out on Wednesday when the bees gathered on the wing of the plan as crews were getting ready to fuel the plane.

Repasky says such swarms form when colonies become too large and the queen leaves half of her bees behind to find a new home. Some swarms can contain 25,000 to 30,000 bees.

Repasky says it's likely there's a wild honeybee colony at the airport somewhere.

The beekeeper was called to remove the insects because they're a protected species that cannot legally be killed.

Off-duty Texas deputy shot at his birthday party

SAN ANTONIO (AP) ? Investigators say an off-duty sheriff's deputy in San Antonio has been shot in the hand during a party for his 26th birthday.

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office says the deputy, whose name hasn't been released, was wounded early Monday at a residence.

Detective Louis Antu says the shooting appears to have been accidental. The deputy was being treated at a San Antonio hospital for an injury not believed to be life-threatening.

Several guests were at the party when the detention officer was shot. Antu says authorities are trying to determine who fired the weapon and whether alcohol was involved.

The sheriff's department did not immediately provide additional details.

(AP) ? Aliya Mustafina stood atop the podium, proudly cradling her medal and watching the Russian flag rise.

She dared not even imagine such a scene six months ago, her left knee aching and the ruthless brilliance that had made her the world's best gymnast no longer within her command. Yet she refused to give in, to the pain in her body or the doubts in her mind, and the reward now lay heavy upon her chest.

"I am very, very happy I've won gold," Mustafina said after winning the Olympic title on uneven bars Monday. "Every medal represents its own thing."

No one could appreciate that better than Beth Tweddle.

Tweddle has been at the forefront of the transformation in British gymnastics, winning every prize there is ? except an Olympic medal. She'd come oh, so close four years ago, missing the bronze by a mere 25-hundredths points, and the devastation almost drove her into retirement.

To finally win a bronze Monday in what is surely the 27-year-old's last Olympics, in front of an adoring British crowd, was all that mattered and not the color.

"I tried to say it didn't matter if I didn't medal, but I've got every other title to my name," Tweddle said. "I can now say I would have been devastated walking away with no medal. I am going to sleep easy tonight."

The medals handed out Monday were for the uneven bars, but they may as well have been for grit and determination. Reminders that talent is not always enough, and that the greatest triumphs are sometimes born out of the biggest disappointments.

Also Monday, Arthur Zanetti gave Brazil its first medal in gymnastics, upsetting "Lord of the Rings" Chen Yibing for the gold on still rings. South Korea's Yang Hak-seon added Olympic gold to his world title on vault. The Americans went home empty-handed, with Sam Mikulak finishing fifth on vault and Gabby Douglas last on uneven bars.

Mustafina was so dominant at the 2010 world championships it seemed impossible she wouldn't overwhelm the field again in London. She left those worlds with a medal in all but one event, including the all-around gold, and her haughty attitude was as entertaining as her gymnastics skills.

Six months later, however, she blew out her left ACL at the European championships, putting her chances of simply competing in London in doubt.

"Sometimes I did," Mustafina said when someone asked if she ever considered quitting. "But these urges left me quickly."

She threw herself into her rehab, coming back so quickly she actually tried to convince her coach she could compete at the world championships last fall.

But there were only glimpses of her old self, and she was downright dismal at this year's Europeans.

"I did not believe I could do it," she acknowledged. "I was nowhere near in the shape I am now."

On this night, however, she was as brilliant as she's ever been.

Mustafina's uneven bars routine is packed with so many difficult skills it leaves her gasping for air by the time she's finished. But she makes them look easy, flipping and floating from one bar to another. Her execution is exquisite, her toes perfectly pointed, her legs razor straight.

When she landed, she threw up her hands in triumph and turned on a megawatt smile. When her score of 16.133 flashed, coach Evgeny Grebenkin picked her up in a bear hug, and chants of "ROSS-EE-YAH!" (Russia) rang out.

Only Douglas was left, and what slim chance the all-around champion had at a medal ended when she stalled on a handstand. The gold was Mustafina's, and the Russian could not stop staring at the scoreboard when the final results posted, a proud and satisfied smile on her face.

She now has a complete set of medals, following her silver from the team competition and bronze from the all-around.

"I was hoping very much I'd done everything I could to win it," Mustafina said. "It's the worth of all the hard work I've put in."

Tweddle might have given Mustafina a real run for the gold had she not landed low on her dismount, needing to take two steps back to steady herself. But after her disappointment four years ago, any medal was as good as gold for Tweddle.

"I saw myself in third and I thought: 'Please don't be fourth again,'" she said. "I just can't put into words what it means to me."

The British have become a surprise force in gymnastics ? they won four medals at these games ? and it was Tweddle who led the way. Her bronze at the 2003 world championships was the first world medal for a British woman, and she won Britain's first world title, on uneven bars, three years later. She has since added two more world titles, one on floor exercise in 2009 and another on bars in 2010.

"It's the best feeling in the world," Tweddle said after securing her bronze. "It's the one medal that was missing from my collection and I've always said I don't care what color it is."

The latest technologies and advanced machines have brought a lot of up-gradation in the range and availability of products in the market. Same is true with the flooring industry which has introduced a wide variety of flooring options to choose from. Porcelain tile and tile that look like wood are among the most in demand flooring materials used for covering the floors, walls, roofs and other spaces of your house or office.

Porcelain tile has been a favorite in kitchens and baths for several years. It is a ceramic tile that can be glazed or unglazed. Porcelain floor tiles have a host of benefits that make them a really good choice all over the home and outside it as well. There is no clear difference between a ceramic tile and a porcelain tile except one is much more resistant to moisture than the other. It is created by mixing clay and other materials together and firing it at very high temperature. This firing process hardens the tile and depending on the time duration and temperature will result how hard the tile will become and how impermeable it will be to water. Porcelain tile can be used as flooring material or can be utilized to cover walls.Porcelain tiles are very easily accessible and no maintenance issues are involved with porcelain tile thus they are the obvious choice for all your tiling needs and demands.

The beauty and appeal of wood is unique and thus many people love to have wood flooring at their space but it has a lot of drawbacks including limited lifespan, not resistant to moisture or sunlight, cannot withstand high traffic, and requires maintenance on frequent basis, to name a few. Due to these reasons nowadays majority of people prefer to opt for tile that looks like wood. The material used to fabricate this type of tile is ceramic hence these wood look tiles are very hard, durable, impervious to moisture and heat resistant as well. In addition to this these tiles are available at much reduced prices than hardwood tile yet providing the same charm to any floor.

In today's internet dominated market several companies provides its customers with these tiles at reasonable prices through their portals. The companies deliver the orders of its customers at their place in a timely and economical manner.

(AP) ? Former 100-meter world champion Kim Collins was expelled by his team from the London Olympics on Saturday for missing training sessions. He said he was being punished for spending time with his wife.

The St. Kitts and Nevis team described him as a "national hero" in announcing the penalty.

Collins, the 2003 world champion, told The Associated Press that he showed up at the athletes village Saturday morning and found that his accreditation had been canceled, locking him out.

Collins was kept out of his scheduled start in the 100 heats on Saturday. He was also entered in the 200 and 4x100 relay. He was hoping to compete in his fifth straight Olympics and carried the St. Kitts and Nevis flag at the opening ceremony.

His absences included visits to see his wife, who arrived in London on Wednesday. Collins said he found the village stressful and spent time with his wife because she helped coach him, and he needed peace and quiet before racing.

"There was some contact between me and the federation, and I explained that I was not abandoning my wife," Collins said in a telephone interview. "I guess that was not approved."

Earlier Saturday, Collins had posted on his Twitter account that "Even men in prison get their wives to visit."

Before his punishment was confirmed, Collins suggested that the 2011 Pan American Games, where he won silver in the 100, would be his final appearance for the Caribbean state.

"For those who saw me run in Mexico. That's the last time I represent my country," he wrote.

Collins was an international star who will be "greatly missed by the whole nation," the team said.

"Mr. Collins' absence from London 2012 is a huge disappointment for the team and for the country, who will not witness their national hero perform at this largest global sports event," St. Kitts team manager Lester Hanley said in a statement. "We wish him well."

Collins is the second of what was a seven-athlete Olympic team from St. Kitts and Nevis to be disciplined. Sprinter Tameka Williams, the only woman on the team, was sent home last weekend for a drug violation.

The St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee said Williams had acknowledged using a substance which was "clearly outside the medical code."

Manchester United to get $559 million in GM shirt sponsor deal

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Manchester United Ltd.'s deal with General Motors Co. to sponsor the hugely popular football club's shirts will bring in 357 million pounds ($559 million) over the agreement's seven-year term, the club said in a regulatory filing Friday.

Terms were first reported by Reuters on July 30.

The disclosure of the record-breaking deal, which will put GM's Chevrolet brand name on the football team's famous red jerseys, came as Manchester United supporters called for a boycott of sponsors' products to pressure the club's American owners to shelve a plan to float the club's stock.

Manchester United Supporters Trust, which has 180,000 members, has fought a high-profile campaign against the American Glazer family, which plans to list United on the New York Stock Exchange this month.

The agreement with GM starts in the 2014-2015 season, but the club will start to reap some financial benefits as soon as this year, Friday's filing said.

GM will pay fees of $18.6 million in this year's and next year's season, it said, before paying $70 million in the 2014-2105 season. GM's payments will rise 2.1 percent each season thereafter, through the 2020-2021 season, it said.

U.S. automaker's global marketing chief was ousted in connection with a deal with the popular English football club.

GM's payments are more than double the current fee paid by insurance broker Aon.

The agreement was announced the day after the Detroit automaker said it was removing its global marketing chief, Joel Ewanick, because he "failed to meet the expectations that the company has for its employees."

Sources told Reuters Ewanick didn't properly report financial details about the jersey deal.

Jorgen Persson has probably just played in his final Olympics. That's saying something. This is his seventh.

Persson and his Swedish teammates were beaten 3-1 Friday by Germany in the team competition.

Persson, 46, is one of three table tennis players to play in every Olympics since 1988, when the game was first introduced into the games.

The other two ? Jean-Michel Saive of Belgium and Zoran Primorac of Croatia ? lost in singles and are not playing the team event. They have said they are unlikely to return. Persson feels the same way.

Last updated 11 hours ago

As a homeowner, you have plenty of opportunities to carry out DIY work on your home. Solving problems associated with your air conditioning and heating units, however, is one field of home improvement that should be left up to the professionals. If you try to repair a broken air conditioning or heating unit, you may end up:

Harming Yourself or Others
An intricate network of wires and gas lines enables your home to be cooled and heated just the way you need it. The same infrastructure that allows you to keep your home comfortable year round has the capacity to cause serious harm if it is handled incorrectly. Potential dangers associated with trying to repair your HVAC system on your own include electrocution, serious burns, and the hard-to-detect release of harmful carbon monoxide gas.

Making Expensive Mistakes
Unless you are a trained and certified HVAC technician, efforts you make to repair your air conditioning or heating unit could backfire, exacerbating existing problems and further compromising the integrity of your air conditioner or heating unit. It is also possible that you could cause structural damage to your home.

Voiding Your Service Plan
If you have a service agreement with your HVAC company, carrying out repairs on your own could void the coverage provided under the service plan.

Covering Up/Delaying Problems
Even if the efforts you make to repair your air conditioning or heating units seem to run smoothly, there is no guarantee that your problems have been solved. They may be temporarily covered up, only to return with more severity.

The next time you hear unfamiliar noises coming from your heating or air conditioning unit or you find that your HVAC system does not have the capacity to keep you comfortable the way it once did, do not pull out the gloves and the toolbox. Instead, contact your local family-run HVAC repair and installation service. To arrange for a professional to inspect and repair your Lake or Geauga County home, call Lew?s Reliable Heat & Air Conditioning at (440) 210-3748!

China's response to US criticism: Don't 'meddle'

By NBC News and wire reports

BEIJING - China has blasted a?State Department report that criticized its controls on religion, saying Thursday that the document was prejudiced and an attempt to meddle in domestic affairs.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry's condemnation of the International Religious Freedom Report released this week was predictable -- and the latest reminder of how human rights issues remain a chronic irritant between Washington and Beijing.

The annual report issued Monday found a "marked deterioration" in state respect for religious freedom in China in 2011, and cited tighter restrictions on religion, especially in Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and nunneries.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei adamantly disagreed.

"Chinese people of every ethnicity enjoy full freedom of religion and faith," Hong said in comments issued on the ministry's website.

"The U.S. side should abandon its prejudices," he said.

"Stop exploiting religious issues to meddle in China's internal affairs, and don't do things that harm Sino-American relations and mutual trust and cooperation," he added.

A stressed relationship
Tension between China and the United States spans issues such as the U.S. trade deficit, American arms sales to Taiwan, and mutual wariness over regional intentions and military plans.

Behind the Wall: Full coverage of China on NBCNews.com

U.S. criticism in the report included a claim that "official interference in the practice of these religious traditions exacerbated grievances and contributed to at least 12 self-immolations by Tibetans in 2011."

Since March 2011, there have been more than 40 self-immolations by Tibetans, including Buddhist monks and nuns, reflecting anger over Chinese controls.

Chinese defend swimmer's gold, knock Western 'bias'

The Chinese government faces challenges by Buddhist Tibetans, who revere the Dalai Lama and support Tibetan independence; members of the Islamic Uighur minority in northwest Xinjiang Province who protest Chinese rule; the outlawed Falun Gong spiritual sect, which authorities accuse of practicing a dangerous cult in the guise of promoting health exercises; and the many underground house churches and religious believers, including Catholics who recognize the authority of the Vatican, who are not part of the officially-sanctioned churches.

The rift between Beijing and the Vatican was dramatized again last month when a Shanghai bishop, ordained with the Vatican's approval, was taken away by officials after he declared he was quitting the Communist-led Patriotic Catholic Association, according to reports.

After a meeting on human rights in late July, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Michael Posner said Beijing was moving in the wrong direction on human rights.

Military, VA release mobile app for PTSD therapy

National Center for Telehealth and Technology

PE Coach lets service people and veterans suffering from PTSD to assess symptoms, record therapy sessions, receive reminders and more.

By Rebecca Ruiz, NBC News

The military has released a new mobile app designed for post-traumatic stress disorder patients in a therapy known as prolonged exposure.

PE Coach was developed by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs and offers users a mobile way of assessing symptoms, recording therapy sessions, receiving reminders for homework and appointments and learning more about PTSD.

The app is available on Apple and Android devices, but is advised for use only when a patient is receiving professional prolonged exposure therapy.

That type of treatment focuses on "exposure practice," or approaching situations the patient has been avoiding because they seem unsafe or are related to the trauma that brought on PTSD. For veterans, this might include avoiding crowded public places or congested traffic. The treatment also involves revisiting the traumatic memory with a clinician in order to learn how to better handle the stressful feelings that it raises.

Part of the therapy, Dr. Greg Reger, a clinical psychologist at DOD's National Center for Telehealth and Technology, told NBC News, is recording each therapy session and listening to it daily in order to overcome fear around those situations. Traditionally, Reger said, patients would leave an appointment with CD recordings and several sheets of paper to help complete daily homework assignments that include confronting an anxiety-inducing scenario.

"Our patients don?t avoid (homework assignments) because they don?t want to get better," Reger said, "but any inconvenience provides an excuse not to do something even if it helps you get better."

Related: Combat to corporate: PTSD stigma blocks some veterans
Related: First opera about Iraq War reaches out to veterans suffering from PTSD

Patients, for example, might find it difficult to listen to the recording if the only CD player available to them is in a car. They might also feel self-conscious about taking notes in public after going into a crowded mall or driving through rush hour traffic, but PE Coach allows a patient to type descriptions directly into the phone. The app, Reger said, is a "dramatic shift" in how convenient it is to stick to daily therapy.

Since a quiet pre-release in March, the app has been downloaded more than 2,000 times. A separate DOD and VA app called PTSD Coach, which was designed for wide use, has been downloaded more than 66,000 times since last year.

Reger said the app would be used by many VA and DOD mental health clinicians who are trained in prolonged exposure therapy.

The ability of the app to capture the homework data, even time-stamping when a patient listened to the therapy recordings, helps clinicians monitor the success of the treatment in ways he or she couldn't do before, Reger said.

"We want to celebrate the response they?ve had because of their hard work."?

Olympics: Why booting the badminton teams was the right call

Badminton's governing body kicked four women's doubles teams out of?the Olympics for trying to lose. Our sports reporter argues they broke?the golden rule of sport.

By Mark Sappenfield,?Staff writer / August 1, 2012

China's Yu Yang (l.) and Wang Xiaoli talk while playing against Jung Kyun-eun and Kim Ha-na, of South Korea, in a women's doubles badminton match at the 2012 Summer Olympics Tuesday in London. Both teams have been thrown out of the Games.

Playing to lose, apparently, is not a tactic. It's a complete perversion of sport.?

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

At least, so said the Badminton World Federation in kicking four women's doubles teams ? two from South Korea, one from Indonesia, and the world No. 1 team from China ? out of the London Olympics.

From the outset, it was obvious that none of the teams wanted to win, dumping serves in the net and generally playing as though this was a Fourth of July barbecue and the brats were burning. The reason was clear: They were trying to avoid playing a top team in the next round after the world's No. 2 pair, which had unexpectedly lost earlier, busted the tournament brackets.

Losing a meaningless round-robin game would be better than losing the next match, which was in the knockout round. Or so the thinking went.?

Is that so different?from basketball teams that rest their best players in a final group-stage game in order to have them ready for the knockout round? Or is it so different from being coy in a group-stage game ? perhaps not showing all your tactical cards ? so that, if you face the same team again when it matters more, you'll have an ace up your sleeve? ?

The answer, as the BWF rightly decided, is yes, there is a huge difference. There are some fine lines in sport, but this was not one of them.?

The difference is that it is never, ever, under any circumstances acceptable to play intentionally to lose a game.?

Take an example from the Beijing Games.?The Argentinian soccer team decided not to start its best player, Lionel Messi, in the final game of the group stage, because it had already qualified for the knockout round. The team was booed soundly by the Beijing crowd. But no disciplinary action was taken against the team. ? ?

The reason: They did not try to lose. The players on the field did not shoot that ball into their own net or fall down like bowling pins whenever they got near their opponents. In fact, they won, 2-0. That is tactics.

Or take another example from last month. Spain played the USA in basketball in Barcelona in a warmup match for the Olympics. Before the game, the Spaniards hinted that they wouldn't be too disappointed if they lost. Said Pau Gasol of his Los Angeles Lakers teammate, American Kobe Bryant: "I'd like to maybe let him win tomorrow and maybe beat him in?London. That would be ideal."?

Well, Spain got the first part of its wish. Team USA stuffed the Spaniards like an alley-oop in front of their own fans, possibly because Spain didn't want to give away its potential game plan in a possible gold-medal match. Should it have been warned or disciplined??

Again, the difference is simple. Spain did not try?to lose. None of the players on the court tried to play badly. In fact, the game being in Barcelona, they probably would have been overjoyed to win ? but not at the cost of foolishness.?

The badminton players blamed the new tournament format used in these Games. In Beijing, every game of the badminton tournament was a knockout game ? there was no round-robin stage. That eliminated the possibility of playing to lose.?

The Korean and Indonesian teams also pointed fingers like naughty schoolchildren, saying of the Chinese: "They started it."?

But all that completely misses the point. It is not the players' jobs to make up the rules, or play for the other team, just as it is not their job to call shuttlecocks in or out. It is their job to play under the rules laid out, and if the Chinese wanted to lose, their opponents should have tried to win 21-0, 21-0 to make their point as emphatically as possible and then lodged a complaint.?

Tactics acknowledge that sometimes the war is bigger than the battles. Intentionally to lose a match is to make a mockery of fair play. If the teams thought they could get away with that ? at the Olympics, of all places ? that was the grossest tactical mistake of all.?
